The Pelangi Pride Centre has just acquired Portia de Rossi’s Unbearable Lightness. This autobiography about de Rossi’s struggles with anorexia and coming out has received only good reviews. Come visit us this Saturday to borrow it!

Review from Publisher’s Weekly:

The author, an actor in movies and TV, (including Ally McBeal, Arrested Development, and Better Off Ted), model, and gay rights advocate, writes that “playing the role of heterosexual while fantasizing about being a homosexual had been my reality since I was a child.” It’s one she played into her 20s, when she was for three years married to a man. Now, she is married to Ellen DeGeneres, whom she met in 2001 after recovering from anorexia and bulimia. De Rossi nicely chronicles the years in between, during which she starved herself to 80 pounds. She artfully draws the reader into the tension of a life lived in secrecy: did anybody notice she lunges rather than walks, the better to burn calories? will anyone guess she is gay? when she nearly fainted, was anyone around? While some details could be viewed as anorexia how-tos, they make it possible to comprehend the twisted logic of de Rossi’s frantic daily pursuits, and grasp the enormity of her achievement in overcoming her problems. The path de Rossi took to her happy ending is well worth reading about: her story is a cautionary tale, an inspiration, and a triumph.

About the film:

In the early days, the Taiwanese have a mostly negative image of the gay community. Now, Taiwan hosts the largest Pride Parade in Asia each year, and among the mostly conservative Asian countries is considered most accepting towards gay people. However, there are still pressures and challenges for the gay people. A group of gay activists are working towards legalizing homosexual marriage in Taiwan and achieving equal rights for the gay people. What kind of challenges do they encounter on the Rainbow Path? Is Taiwan ready to accept the changes?

In this episode of Eye on Taiwan series, Discovery Channel explores the gay movement in Taiwan in recent years. In 2006, the “Gender Equity Education Act” and in 2007,the “Gender Equity Employment Act” was passed, thus ensuring some basic legal protection for the sexual minorities. Some gay people, having won over their parents’ acceptance, are fighting for greater acceptance from the society. It is a tough journey, but these people have chosen to fight on on the Rainbow Path.

About the film:

8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION exposes the Mormon Church’s historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California’s Proposition 8 and the religion’s ongoing campaign against gay rights. The film takes place in California and Utah as Mormons, following their prophet’s call to action, wage spiritual warfare with money and misinformation against gay citizens, doing everything they can to deny them of marriage and the rights that come with it. “8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION” opens in theatres on June 18th, 2010, two years after the first gay marriages took place in California (June 17th, 2008). — (C) Official Site
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/8-the-mormon-proposition/

“Director Reed Cowan, who is a former Mormon missionary, “planned on making a film about gay teen homelessness and suicide in Utah, but switched his focus to Mormon ideology because of how it contributes to the homophobia that causes these problems”.[2] The film focuses on the immense wealth and power of the Mormon Church, and how the Church uses the National Organization for Marriage to advocate for denial of rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans. It points out that Mormon leader Thomas S. Monsonasked to ensure the passage of the controversial California Proposition 8. It also points out the fact that many homeless in Utah are LGBT teens who were abandoned by their Mormon parents.
According to the New York Times, the film “uncovers the classified church documents and the largely concealed money trail of Mormon contributions that paid for a high-powered campaign to pass Proposition 8″, noting that “Mormons raised an estimated $22 million for the cause.”

PPC presents: Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City

This freewheeling saga of the lives and loves of the unforgettable residents of San Francisco’s 28 Barbary Lane has been embraced by readers – and viewers – around the world, both gay, lesbian, bi, transgendered (GLBT) and straight. The books have sold millions of copies, and been translated into over a dozen languages; and the mini-series (three so far) have been seen by many millions more. Although all three of the adaptations are first-rate (Maupin was directly involved in their production), the original is a truly special work. Its inspired performances and filmmaking bring the novel gloriously to life, while creating a landmark work not only of television but of GLBT film.

Produced by Britain’s Channel 4 in 1993, this ground-breaking television miniseries created an uproar when it aired on PBS the following year. Adapted from Maupin’s first novel and starring Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney, the drama shattered precedent by depicting the love lives of gay and straight characters alike. This provoked official condemnations from the legislatures of Georgia, South Carolina and Oklahoma-and a bomb threat at the PBS station in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
“Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City” received record-high ratings, Best Miniseries recognition from the National Board of Review, two major Emmy nominations and television’s most prestigious honor, the Peabody Award.

This documentary shows the inability of Mongolian LGBT people to exist, live and breathe in the same way as everyone else in the country, inability to receive the same protection of law as they are targeted for direct and indirect discrimination, violence and hate-inspired brutality, in a daily basis.

LGBT Centre is the first LGBT human rights organisation of Mongolia, established with five founders in February 2007, fighting for the official recognition of the organisation by the Government of Mongolia for nearly three years.

The official recognition as a non-governmental organisation was given to the organisation on 16 December 2009 after much international attention from all corners in the world, following which LGBT Centre initiated and implemented a number of activities, one of which was to make this documentary.

This documentary was made by LGBT Centre to disseminate information about the abysmal state of LGBT peoples human rights in Mongolia and is copyrighted.
